The primary advantage of a Google Aware Subscription is the extended recording history. By default, Nest cameras only record three hours of event history, an “event” being a short clip triggered by sound or motion. That’s good enough if you’re awake and within quick reach of your phone, but not enough for events recorded overnight or when you’re on a trip.
A standard Google Aware Subscription extends event history up to 30 days. Google Store Pickup sells an upgrade option, the Nest Aware Plus, which extends this to 60 days and adds 10 continuous days of video history if you need to view more footage. Just be aware that not all Nest cameras support continuous recording, the main restriction being anything battery-powered.

The next biggest advantage is familiar face recognition. While the latest Nest Cams and Nest Doorbell Battery can differentiate between people, packages, animals, and vehicles using onboard AI that triggers appropriate notifications, Awake subscribers can teach their cameras to recognize individual friends and family. So instead of getting an alert that a “person” is at the door, you’ll be told whether it’s Roger, Lakesha, or Stephanie.

Normally, any Google Aware Subscription will automatically continue to renew (and bill you) until you cancel. The exception to this is the 30-day free trial, which requires you to choose payment to continue. When you cancel, Aware will remain active until the end of your current billing period, whether it’s a month or a year.
Should you pay for Nest Aware?
If you’re regularly away from home and/or at risk of serious crime, Aware’s event recording and facial recognition can make a real difference. It’s always better to catch intruders in the act, but if you can provide video evidence you at least have a chance of pressing charges or recovering the goods.
Another criterion is Google’s commitment to the ecosystem, not just in cameras, but the smart home platform as a whole. If you have an Amazon Echo Show as your smart display, you automatically get more than an Alexa-compatible camera. Similarly, if you already have cameras from companies like Arlo or Wyze, it’s illogical to complicate your system by adding a Google model, never mind paying for Aware, which is exclusive to Nest hardware.
