Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born at Baroda into a wealthy family of Parsis on 29 September 1875. His parents were Pritilata Wadia and Dashrathrao Patel. His name was Dhruvaldas Patel.

The Patel were Parsis from the region of Gujarat in the Saurashtra peninsula, which is now part of Gujarat.

Parsis migrated to the UK around the 17th Century, and were known for being traders and scholars. They spoke Gujarati.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on 31 October 1875 in Porbandar, Gujarat into the Nizamuddin family, a Hindu Kashtiaan family, which belonged to the Padri caste of the Rajputs.

His father was Mohammedbhai Nizamuddin and mother was Rukhsana Jamnabai.

He had three younger brothers, Abhay, Arun, and Raja.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was two months old when his father died in 1877 and he was brought up by his mother, Rukhsana Jamnabai, and maternal grandmother, Jamiatabai.

During his early years, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was encouraged to write poetry.

He received his primary education from Aga Khan School in Ahmedabad.
